Gravitational Marketing is about returning to the roots of what advertising is really all about. But, the question is…What is real advertising?Well, I can tell you with surety that it is not what they do on Madison Avenue these days. And for you, my small business marketing friends, it is not what most of your peers are doing either. On Madison Ave they have lost all clarity about what advertising is and its real purpose. I was reading an article today by Denny Hatch, who is an amazing direct marketer, about the current Bud Lite “Real American Genesis” advertising campaign.Denny was expressing his frustration regarding the campaign and how the entire concept is a mockery of the core customer that the campaign has been designed to serve. So, where do you draw the line on cute and clever? Is entertainment value at the expense of your core customer base a sound and acceptable practice in advertising today? Should it be?I would have to say no.And I think the forefathers of advertising would back me.See, at the heart of all of the big Madison Avenue ad agencies there was at one time a true ad man, a real marketer who knew what the purpose of advertising is.It’s not entertaining, it’s not alienating your core customer base, and it’s not being funny or cute or creative for the sake of being funny, cute, creative or entertaining. But, these great ad men are gone and the new régime doesn’t get it.It’s obvious they don’t get it. Look at the high client turnover in the agency business and the crap they are putting out on the streets.I don’t expect you to take my word for it…here are some quotes from some of the great ad men of all time (courtesy of Denny Hatch’s Business Common Sense Newsletter.)”The object of advertising is to sell goods. It has no other justification worth mentioning.” –Raymond Rubicam, Founder, Young & Rubicam”Your job is to sell, not entertain.” –Jack Maxson, Freelance Copywriter”If it doesn’t sell, it’s not creative.” –Benton & Bowles Credo in the 1930s and 1940s”I do not regard advertising as entertainment or an art form, but as a medium of information.” –David Ogilvy”Advertising in the final analysis should be news. If it is not news it is worthless.”–Adolph S. Ochs, American Newspaper Publisher”Advertising nourishes the consuming power of men. It sets up before a man the goal of a better home, better clothing, better food for himself and his family. It spurs individual exertion and greater production.” –Winston Churchill”If I were starting life over again, I am inclined to think that I would go into the advertising business in preference to almost any other. The general raising of the standards of modern civilization among all groups of people during the past half century would have been impossible without the spreading of the knowledge of higher standards by means of advertising.” — Franklin D. Roosevelt”All of us who professionally use the mass media are the shapers of society. We can vulgarize that society. We can brutalize it. Or we can help lift it onto a higher level.” –William Bernbach, Founder, DDBThese men know what advertising is supposed to be about. What it takes to be a good marketer and what it was when then started their agency. What they believed then is what we embrace today and what we teach in Gravitational Marketing. So, let me tell you why this is so important for you to understand. Many small businesses emulate the national advertising and marketing they see on T.V., Radio and in Print. – That is the crap these new agency guys are putting out.The ad agencies in your area are wannabe Madison Avenue agencies and don’t even do the crappy advertising half as good as they do. I’m a dog person. I grew up with large dogs including Labrador retrievers, huskies, Saint Bernards and Anatolian Shepherds. I love the way large dogs roam an area, protecting their turf. They’re big and lumbering, full of love and play.As much as I like these dogs, I dislike cats. To me, cats seem needy and moody, temperamental and vindictive. I don’t care for the way they can take over a space or insist on getting your attention until you feel forced to give it.It wasn’t until a recent visit to a large animal shelter that I began to look at cats a little differently. In a neighboring town there’s a large shelter facility. I believe they have a contract with the city to also serve as animal control. At any rate, the facility is equipped with wings to house dogs large and small. They also have cat rooms where the more docile cats can co-exist together, and a viewing room full of caged cats for those that need to be in their own space. My guide was well versed in animal behavior and even introduced me to their on-staff behaviorist who has spent years training birds, dolphins, cats and dogs.I learned that cats need mental and physical stimulation as much as any human. Items like cat trees give cats an opportunity to change their surroundings and see things differently. They can climb up cat trees and look down, hide in the enclosures as though stalking prey. They can use the sisal-wrapped posts as a place to scratch their nails. Cat trees are one way that shelter cats can get the physical stimulation necessary to keep them in good health (loose limbs, trim weight, etc.) but also the physical stimulation necessary to ward off bad behavior. If this interests you, I encourage you to check with your local animal shelter and find out if they’d benefit from a donation of cat trees. Maybe you can help enrich the lives of shelter animals near you.
Most individuals place a significant amount of focus on the health and well-being of their family pet. If this is a concern for you, then it is important to take advantage of as many resources as possible, in order to improve the health and happiness of your animal friend. The utilisation of vets for pets is a necessary investment that every pet owner must make to avoid many potentially catastrophic health risks, which animals can fall victim to. Two of the most important veterinary services that a pet owner can take advantage of are the utilisation of vaccines and neutering. Most individuals understand the incredible importance associated with taking advantage of vaccines during a person’s youth. These vaccines represent sources of defence for your body and help to encourage a strong immune system. Vaccinations for dogs act in the same way, as they help to prevent several important diseases from being transmitted to your pet. These diseases could otherwise prove to be catastrophic to your pet’s health. By taking advantage of the knowledge of a trained veterinarian, you will be able to identify the appropriate time periods in which vaccinations should be pursued to maximize the health of your pet.In addition to the advantages that exist with vaccinations, another important health factor to take advantage of is found with desexing dogs and cats. Unless you have the intention of breeding your pet, it is vital that you take advantage of the opportunities that are available with neutering. There are a tremendous number of animals who are abandoned each year, as a result of uncontrolled breeding. When you take the time to have your pet desexed, you will discover a wide number of advantages that will prove beneficial to both the pet and the pet owner. For your pet, there are many health advantages associated with this procedure. In dog desexing for male dogs, the testicles are removed, which represent a common source of health problems such as prostate diseases and testicular cancer. Another advantage that is created with desexing dogs is found with the behavioural alterations you will notice in your animal. These procedures will often help to reduce aggression or hyperactivity, as a result of reduced testosterone levels, as well as eliminate uncomfortable pet habits, such as mounting and masturbation. Desexing dogs and cats means they are less likely to want to escape and roam the neighbourhood in search of a mate. It is a known fact that roaming animals are at a much higher risk of being hit by a car on the road or be involved in a fight with another animal. So, there are many incredible benefits that a pet and owner can take advantage of when investing in dog vaccinations and desexing for dogs. The many health benefits created through these procedures will help to improve the health and happiness of your animal friend, as you enjoy their company.
